What is family systems therapy?
Family systems therapy is a type of family therapy that treats the family as one connected emotional unit. Rather than "fixing" the person with the most visible problem, a family systems therapist helps everyone see the patterns, roles, and communication habits that keep the problem going — and change them together.
"Our families shape our world view, our attitudes and behaviors, our identity and our self-esteem." That idea sits at the center of Dr. Audrey's work.
When a teen is anxious, a child is acting out, or parents can't stop arguing, it's natural to look for the one person who needs help. But families work more like a mobile: touch one piece and every other piece moves. That's why individual therapy alone sometimes stalls — the person improves in session, then comes home to the same patterns.
Family systems therapy works on those patterns directly. Dr. Audrey earned her PhD in Family Studies and has spent more than 20 years applying this lens with families, which means she's looking at the whole picture: how your family communicates, who carries which role, what happens when stress hits, and what each person needs to feel safe and heard.
The result is change that sticks, because it happens where your family actually lives. Families who also need help with a specific teen concern can pair family sessions with adolescent counseling, and couples carrying strain into parenting can add couples therapy.
Signs your family could benefit from a family therapist
You don't need to be in crisis to start family counseling. Most families reach out when one or more of these feels familiar.
The same arguments keep repeating, and nobody feels heard.
Your teen has shut down, pulled away, or only talks to you when there's conflict.
A child's anxiety, depression, or behavior is affecting everyone at home.
You and your partner disagree about discipline, screens, or rules.
Your kids aren't listening, and you're exhausted from yelling or giving in.
You're navigating divorce, co-parenting, or a blended family.
Anger, harsh words, or sibling conflict have become the norm.
The family is grieving a loss, a move, an illness, or another big transition.
A family member's mood disorder is putting strain on everyone else.
When a family member is distressed, the whole family feels it. Family therapy gives everyone a way to talk about it — and a plan.

Teen counseling works better when the family is part of it.
Teens need a space that's theirs — somewhere they can say what they're actually feeling without worrying about how a parent will react. They also go home every night to the same family. Dr. Audrey's teen counseling gives adolescents both: private one-on-one sessions, plus family sessions that change the dynamics they return to.
Teen sessions
Coping skills, DBT tools, and a trusted adult who listens without lecturing.
Parent sessions

Family sessions
Practicing new ways to talk, repair, and set limits — together.
Clear confidentiality
Teens and parents both know up front what stays private and what's shared for safety.
From first call to real change at home

Request & schedule
Submit the form or call. The office responds within one business day and sends a secure video link — no downloads required.
Parent intake
Often the first session is with parents only, so Dr. Audrey can understand your family's history, concerns, and goals before meeting everyone.
Map the system
Through teen, parent, and family sessions, Dr. Audrey identifies the patterns and roles driving conflict — and builds a plan with you.
Practice & sustain
Skills get practiced in session and at home. Progress is reviewed regularly, and sessions step down as things stabilize.
Family therapy vs. teen counseling vs. parent counseling
Most families use a mix. Here's how each format helps — Dr. Audrey will recommend a starting point after your first session.
| Format | Who attends | Best for | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Family therapy | Two or more family members, together | Repeating conflict, communication breakdown, transitions, blended families | The patterns between people |
| Teen counseling | Teen one-on-one with Dr. Audrey | Anxiety, depression, self-harm, school stress, identity | The teen's coping skills and self-understanding |
| Parent counseling | One or both parents | Discipline, limits, co-parenting, parental burnout | How parents respond and lead |
| Combined plan | Rotates by need | Most families with a struggling teen | All of the above, in sync |

Why families choose Dr. Audrey
Plenty of therapists see families. Few have made families their academic specialty. Dr. Audrey Kteily holds a PhD in Family Studies, is a Certified Family Life Educator through the National Council on Family Relations, and is a published author on family dynamics. Families describe her as warm, direct, and patient — including with teens who don't want to be there.
She's also refreshingly human. She believes therapy works best when everyone can be authentic, which is why you won't find her in a suit — and why teens tend to relax once they discover she's a Ravenclaw who still builds with Legos.

Questions about family therapy & teen counseling
Straight answers about how family counseling works, who attends, and getting started in Texas, New Jersey, or New York.
Family systems therapy is a form of family therapy that treats the family as one connected emotional unit. Instead of focusing only on the person with the most visible problem, a family systems therapist looks at the patterns, roles, and communication habits that keep a problem going, and helps the whole family change them together.
In everyday use, no. Family therapy and family counseling describe the same service: a licensed clinician working with two or more family members to improve communication, reduce conflict, and solve problems together. Dr. Audrey uses both terms. Her doctoral training is in Family Studies, so her family counseling is grounded in a family systems model.
Consider a family therapist when the same arguments keep repeating, a child or teen is struggling and it is affecting everyone at home, parents disagree about discipline, the family is going through divorce, remarriage, a move, or a loss, or communication has shut down. You do not need to wait for a crisis. Families often get the most out of therapy when they start early.
Often both. Teen counseling gives an adolescent a private space to build coping skills and talk openly, while family sessions change the patterns at home that the teen returns to every day. Dr. Audrey typically blends the two, with individual teen sessions, parent-only sessions, and whole-family sessions as needed. The mix is decided together after the first appointment.
For most families, yes. Research on telehealth therapy shows outcomes comparable to in-person care for most concerns. Online sessions also make it easier for everyone to attend, including a parent who travels, a college student, or children living between two homes, and many teens are more comfortable talking from their own space.
Not everyone, every time. Some sessions include the whole family, some include one parent and one child, and some are parent-only or teen-only. Change in one part of a family system affects the rest, so meaningful progress is possible even when a family member is not ready to participate.
Yes, as long as each participant is physically located in Texas, New Jersey, or New York at the time of the session, the states where Dr. Audrey is licensed. If a family member is in another state, for example a student at an out-of-state college, contact the office before booking so options can be reviewed.

It depends on the family and the goals. Many families meet weekly at the start, then move to every other week as things stabilize. Dr. Audrey reviews progress with the family regularly so you always know what you are working toward and when it may be time to step down or finish.
For clients under 18, a parent or legal guardian completes intake paperwork and consents to treatment. In separated or divorced families, the office may ask for the custody or parenting-plan documents that show who can consent. Dr. Audrey explains confidentiality to both teens and parents at the first session, including what stays private and when safety concerns must be shared.
Dr. Audrey is an out-of-network provider and can provide a superbill you can submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement. Ask your insurer about out-of-network benefits for family psychotherapy and for individual psychotherapy for your teen. Call (888) 718-7045 or email admin@draudrey.net for current rates.
