For aspiring LPCs and counseling students
Selecting a supervisor you feel confident and comfortable with is an important part of your training. Your supervisor sees your first real cases, your first ethical dilemmas and your first doubts. The relationship has a significant impact on your professional development, and on the counselor you will be long after the supervision hours are logged.
If you want a supervisor who will guide you through ethically assessing and treating clients, while also helping you understand the business side of counseling and therapy, Dr. Audrey Kteily may be a good fit.
Who is Dr. Audrey as a supervisor?
Dr. Audrey has been a Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas since 2001 and has held Supervisor status since 2004. Over that time she has supervised LPC Associates, formerly known as LPC Interns, as they worked toward their full Texas license.
Her clinical background gives supervisees a wide lens. She holds a PhD in Family Studies from Texas Woman's University and a Master's in Counseling from Dallas Baptist University, and over more than 20 years she has worked with survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, severe mental illness and co-occurring diagnoses, addictions, PTSD and complex PTSD, and LGBTQ+ families. She is also a Certified Family Life Educator, C-DBT certified and a published author in the field of family dynamics.
What supervision with Dr. Audrey covers
Ethical assessment and treatment
Supervision centers on the core of clinical work: how to assess a client carefully, form a sound treatment plan, recognize when a case is outside your competence, and handle the ethical questions that come up in real sessions.
Working with families and teens
Dr. Audrey's specialty is family systems and adolescent work. Associates interested in family therapy, parent counseling or teen counseling get supervision from someone who has spent her career in those rooms.
The business side of counseling
Many new counselors finish graduate school with strong clinical training and very little preparation for the practical side of the profession. Dr. Audrey helps supervisees build a more complete understanding of how a counseling practice actually runs.
Professional identity
Dr. Audrey believes clients and therapists do their strongest work when they can be fully authentic. Supervision is a place to figure out what kind of counselor you are, not to imitate someone else.
How supervision sessions run
Supervision is collaborative. You bring cases, questions and the moments that kept you up at night; Dr. Audrey helps you think them through, points out what you may be missing and pushes you to articulate your clinical reasoning. Expect honest feedback delivered with warmth, and room to disagree.
An affirming approach
Dr. Audrey's practice is LGBTQ+-friendly and LGBTQ+-owned. She unapologetically affirms LGBTQ+ clients and meets them where they are, offering the same quality of care given to heterosexual and cisgender clients while understanding the discrimination this community has faced and still faces. Supervisees learn to bring the same understanding to their own work.
Texas requirements
LPC Associate supervision in Texas is governed by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors, part of the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council. Requirements for supervised hours, supervision format and paperwork are set by the board and can change, so check the current rules as you plan your path to licensure. Dr. Audrey can talk with you about how supervision would be structured.
